Epic Games introduces new vibe coded launcher and confirms Fortnite is coming to Linux

Epic Games has announced a major overhaul of its anti-cheat infrastructure for Linux with the introduction of Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) Linux V2. While EAC has supported native Linux game clients since 2014 and added Wine/Proton compatibility in 2021, the existing opt-in framework meant many developers hadn't enabled it, including popular titles like Fortnite, which remains unavailable on Linux despite earlier announcements. The primary limitation stemmed from the Linux implementation failing to deliver protection levels comparable to Windows, leaving players vulnerable to cheating and deterring game studios from adopting the system.

The new EAC Linux V2 represents an immediate solution to close this security gap. By leveraging existing Linux security features such as signed kernels, signed kernel modules, and secure boot with attestation, Epic aims to bring Linux protection levels much closer to parity with Windows in the near term. The company is also pursuing longer-term goals involving operating system-level assurances that would isolate player data from both anti-cheat providers and game companies while preventing gameplay tampering, a vision they hope will gain traction across the industry with continued collaboration, including ongoing communication with Valve regarding Steam hardware support.

Alongside the anti-cheat announcement, Epic has revealed a redesigned Epic Games Launcher now available in preview for Windows, macOS, and Linux, marking the platform's first official expansion to the open-source ecosystem. The new launcher, which Epic acknowledged was vibe coded using AI-assisted development, claims 1.8x faster startup times compared to competitors and officially supports Ubuntu 22.04 LTS+, Fedora 43+, and Debian 12+. Epic confirmed that once EAC Linux V2 achieves critical adoption among distribution maintainers, Fortnite will launch on Linux through this new client, with similar anti-cheat improvements made available to other developers wanting to reach Linux players.
