Pharo 14 released with modernized development tools and virtual machine
The Pharo project has officially released version 14 of its Smalltalk-based living development environment, marking not only a significant technical update but also a strategic shift in release cadence. As the first Pharo version published under the new fall schedule (September–November), Pharo 14 breaks from the project's traditional spring releases and introduces sweeping changes to both developer tools and the underlying virtual machine.
The headline improvements center on a comprehensive modernization of Pharo's tooling ecosystem. Mission Control arrives as a new system monitoring utility, while Pulse replaces the longtime Spotter launcher. The Method Browser receives a complete redesign, and the Settings Browser has been rewritten and adopted as the default configuration interface. Further consolidating the developer experience, Epicea (version control integration) and ProfStef (interactive tutorial system) have migrated into the NewTools framework. Command-line capabilities have also expanded with TestRunner integration, a command-line debugger, and enhanced Sindarin script tooling, all advancing Pharo's Spec-based tooling migration.
At the VM level, Pharo 14 delivers substantial performance and architectural improvements. Frame unification and stack management refinements clean up the interpreter and execution engine, while RISC-V JIT support opens the door to new hardware architectures. Memory management gets an upgrade with direct old-space allocation and multiple garbage collection enhancements. On the compilation front, extensive Slang/C translation work brings correctness fixes, improved test coverage, and better inspection tools. Platform support benefits from SDL updates, improved CI pipelines, cross-build capabilities, and refreshed third-party dependencies, future-proofing Pharo for emerging platforms and development workflows.
